“Simple Tin” The Sequel

11 May

In yesterday’s post I showed you some cool ideas that would help you convert your Tin Cans into cool and recycled items. Today we step it up another notch in “Simple Tin” The Sequel and show you some artisan pieces. Many variations of these cool items can be found on etsy and generally online.

This mirror made out of pop cans is really cool! The colourful mosaic look is something that can be achieved or you could use one colour. Squares could be cut larger. Be careful – since a project like this means exposing the sharp edges of tin.

Needed:

Metal Cutter

Mallet

Gloves

Stud Tack

Backing Board

Mirror

Once again, with additional re-purposed hardware this time you have recreated the Tin Can into this cool industrial caddy.

Add a few more years of shelf life to the Tin Can and get inspired to re-cycle, re-purpose and reCREATE.

“Simple Tin”

10 May

Recycling is something that I have embraced and just do!

My actual garbage output has decreased immensely.

I am glad to see that programs have been started all over the world to create less waste and promote recycling things. If you think of the amount of stuff that just lies around, unwanted, unclaimed and unused it’s a little sad really.

I would safely guess that Bottles, Paper Products and Tin Cans make up the bulk of product packaging that is collected and recycled.  When you go through a supermarket or grocery store shelves upon shelves are stacked with this sort of packaging.

In a previous post “message in a bottle” I showed you some ideas that hopefully inspired some of you to consider to re-CREATE with bottles.

This post is Act One of “Simple Tin” starring the Tin Can.

Image

In this post I am showing you some simple ideas that can be completed fairly easily.

Now these tins have been selected for shape, graphic, patina and are used in a very simple way – AS IS VASE!

ImageImage

Image

These Tins have been converted by wrapping it, painting it, belting it or tiling it. By using any of these techniques you can transform the tin from basic to beautiful!

ImageImageImageImageImage

And TIN there was light! The Tin Lantern. This is another neat way to illuminate a regular Tin into a starring role. With this method you may need the following items.

Hammer

Nails

Ice Pick

Paint is optional

Tea Lights

A Design in Mind

These look great where ever candlelight is desired whether that be in the garden, on the veranda or porch, at the dinner table, on the mantle…

Have Fun!

Next time we step it up in Act Two of “Simple Tin”

Bicycle Made For Two

24 Apr

“I can’t remember, not ever having a bicycle.”

The joy of riding a bike is something that I look forward to when the weather is good.

Now mind you, I’m not a fanatic that joyfully cruises through rain, sleet and snow or dodges traffic like I’m on a dirt bike course.  I do have a few friends who are like that though.

Yes, there are times I am GREEN with envy as they tell their collision course all-terrain weather provoking bike stories.

“That’s when I switch gears and talk GREEN, earth GREEN.”

As an Artist and Designer people are often fascinated when I start spouting the whole reclaim, recycle and re-CREATE mantra. Many get it and some don’t really seem to be interested in reusing something ~ until you start talking about something they have a passion for.

“Today it’s the bike!”

“RE~TIRE”

18 Apr

I tend to prefer re-purposing various natural inspired materials like reclaimed wood, metals, textiles, paper products, glass and stone.  Working with these materials keeps me connected to nature and I find them easier to integrate into my design projects, artwork and stand alone styling.

However, my hat goes off to those who recycle and re-purpose man made items. I can definitely appreciate that someone can take something that was made with one purpose in mind and put a new spin on it. These are the items, that by re-inventing their use, landfills get a reprieve from becoming a wasted dumping ground. The tire is one of those things that needs to find a second life.

Image

Just think! Our cars and trucks look spectacular in a new set of tires and rims! Remember there are four in a set. We are encouraged to dump tires every season or every few years for a new set! Got the picture! That is a lot of Tires. Well it’s time to “Re-Tire” and burn rubber. These designs are awesome:

Pallet Playground

27 Mar

pal·let [pal-it]  noun

“A small, low, portable platform on which goods are placed for handling, storage or moving in warehouses, factories or vehicles”

Pallets have been re-used for years, usually more as a functional option and less as an artistically designed crafted piece. I remember when my dad would bring home these wooden skids and use them in the garage to keep certain things off the concrete floor or when we would use them as a stage for our neighbourhood rock shows or to create these haphazard styled ramps to ride our bikes across. Those were the times when a “Pallet was a Pallet”, basic in design functionality.

The Pallet has now become a mainstay in the Playground of re-purposing and reCREATing.

“The Pallet has now become COOL”

People are getting more and more innovative with the whole concept of “reclaiming” to “re-purpose” and “reCREATE”.  Pallets are proving to be so versatile.  You can use them both inside and outside.

Check out these COOL and fairly easy Pallet projects. Get inspired!

Reclaim and reCREATE something fresh like a hanging rack of sorts:

It would be cool to treasure hunt for some re-purposed hooks or knobs. You could add some paint, distress it, stain it, vary the size. It’s a project that could be done fairly easily and you can put your creative touch on it.
